The project

Billi automates the paperwork that agencies and their contractors would otherwise do by hand. The agency side manages contractors, approves expense claims, edits assignments, generates contracts and tracks signatures. The contractor side is timesheets, expense claims and invoices. Every month the contractor’s timesheet goes out to the client for electronic signature (YouSign), and approving it generates a PDF invoice that is sent by email. Contracts and amendments are generated automatically at every assignment or change, from the agency’s own templates.

The hard parts

• —Reliable, fast PDF generation at scale: grover and Puppeteer in a headless Chromium, orchestrated by Sidekiq workers so that dozens of documents generate in parallel
